Background

The Research Chair in Obesity was created in 1997 by Claude Bouchard with the financial assistance of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), Hoffman La Roche and Université Laval, Québec. The renewal of this joint collaboration in 2000 confirmed the leadership of the interdisciplinary team of obesity investigators of Université Laval, now directed by Dr. Denis Richard.

A new agreement was settled in 2005 in partnership with the CIHR and Merck Frosst Canada. Now the Research Chair in Obesity can rely upon the financial support of Merck Frosst Canada and the CIHR to pursue its work over the next five years.

The research interests of the Chair are related to the neuronal and hormonal processes related to energy balance regulation. Furthermore, the Chair supports an educative platform by proposing training initiatives and disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge in regards to prevention and treatment of obesity.
