Video: Isabelle Dionne about exercise contribution to obesity treatment in older adults
Interview with Isabelle Dionne, Centre de recherche sur le vieillissement, Université de Sherbrooke.
The priority in older overweight adults is to increase physical
capacity, increasing muscle strength and metabolic health and quality of
life. Considering that older overweight adults do not respond to a weight loss program as younger adults, this is achieved mainly with an exercise program including strength training and aerobic training more than by dieting.
Before putting an overweight older adult on a weight loss program, it is important to prevent further loss of muscle mass and bone mineral density. Then a careful evaluation of health conditions, physical capacity and fragility level is prerequisite.
