Medical Consequences of obesity

Overweight and obesity, particularly in the case of fat accumulation in the abdominal area, are related to high risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Obesity is also linked to many types of cancer and other chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis and respiratory problems.

The American Heart Association now considers obesity as a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which reflects the significant increase in the importance of obesity as the cause of a whole set of cardiovascular complications. Research has shown that the adverse effects of overweight can show-up after a delay that may extend to ten years.
