Treatment
It is widely agreed that a 5-10% weight loss can effectively reduce the risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adults: abdominal obesity, arterial pressure, the lipid profile and glycemia substantially improve while the use of medication is reduced according to the degree of weight loss.
The target weight loss for extreme obesity is, however, much greater, reaching sometimes more than 50 kg, which only bariatric surgery can help reduce effectively. Despite the wide-ranging benefits of reaching and keeping a healthy weight, actual practice and policies have not succeeded in curbing the increase in obesity prevalence in North America.
